+ Something should be done about Broadway intersection

Dear Editor:

As a Village resident for several years, I was dismayed at the article in this week’s Longboat Observer about the FDOT’s decision that the intersection of Gulf of Mexico Drive and Broadway doesn’t need a traffic light or a reduction in the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph.

There are at least three problems with this intersection. 1. Almost all of the cars entering the Key or leaving are driving faster that 45 mph. 2. Limits in sight created by curves in the highway.  3. The two sides of Broadway are not directly across from each other, so there is much confusion when cars on either side want to turn left.

I asked a Longboat police officer once what to do about this problem, and he said drive up and cross at Whitney Beach Plaza. During the winter, I often do this. What a waste of time and energy! I have witnessed several accidents here. How many more before something is done?
