The monument sign to the Summerfield Crest neighborhood has been destroyed.
Only one of the sign's stone columns remains intact.
Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority Operations Department Director Ryan Heise said his department was notified of the sign's demise Wednesday night, and his staff will take immediate action to facilitate repairs.
Heise said the sign should be replaced by mid-April. The project likely will cost between $2,000 and $4,000, and should be covered by insurance.
Typical sign vandalism to monument signs includes spray painting or dents from being hit by baseball bats, Heise said.
"(Vandalism) has become less problematic within the last few years, but this is not abnormal," he said. "Street signs get taken out (regularly) for us. It's hard to tell if this (was) intentional."
