Lakewood Ranch goalkeeper Alexandra Latham had three straight saves, helping lead the host Lady Mustangs to a 4-3 (3-0 PKs) victory over Barron Collier in a Class 4A-Region 3 quarterfinal Jan. 24.

The Lady Cougars took a 1-0 lead six minutes into the match after miscommunication between Latham and defender Amanda Baar.

Lakewood responded with a little less than 22 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Kaitlin Deglman. The Lady Mustangs extended their lead with less than two minutes to play in the first half on a goal by forward Tyler Gordon off an assist by Deana Haller.

Barron Collier tied the game to open the second half — another result of miscommunication.

The Lady Cougars extended their lead 15 minutes into the second half when Lakewood was called for a penalty inside the box. Marissa Stovring, who scored all of Barron Collier’s goals, took the penalty kick and scored, giving the Lady Cougars a 3-2 lead.

Lakewood responded three minutes later when midfielder Aubrey Riggins headed the ball past the Lady Cougars goalkeeper off a corner kick by Lindsay Martinez.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the two teams met in the center of the field for penalty kicks.

Latham notched three straight saves while Haley Martin, Delaney Riggins and Martinez all scored to give the Lady Mustangs the victory.

With the win, Lakewood will host Cape Coral Ida Baker in a regional semifinal Jan. 27.
