The Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key thinks scholarships are important and knows that aspiring college students' costs are rising.

At its April 10 weekly breakfast meeting, Kiwanis Club President Richard Crawford asked for a motion to increase the amount of total scholarships given to area students from $40,000 to $65,000. The majority of Kiwanis members in attendance approved the decision.

The move increases the total number of grants and scholarships the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club Foundation gives out from $75,000 to $100,000. The club also has plans to increase the $35,000 it gives out in grants for next year.

"We hope this move will garner more donations in the community," Crawford said. "We have a lot of money in our account for this purpose and we should use it."
