+ Karl Rove to speak at Lincoln Day dinner
Karl Rove will speak at the Sarasota County Republican Club Lincoln Day dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at Hyatt Sarasota. Rove recently released his memoir, “Courage and Consequence,” which features a chapter on Sept. 11.

Rove and then President George W. Bush began that day at The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, where they had arrived the night before and had dinner with then Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. According to Rove’s memoir, conversation touched briefly on the next day’s events but was focused mainly on a Civil War book that the president was reading.

“No one was thinking that wartime leadership would become a pressing topic,” Rove writes.

The morning of Sept. 11, Bush rose early to run alongside Longboat Key’s beaches and ran three miles before inviting Richard Keil, of Bloomberg News, to join him for another two miles. Bush was visiting Emma E. Booker Elementary School, in Sarasota, when he received the news of the terrorist attacks.
