A worker at Applebee’s in Lakewood Ranch received an unexpected surprise while checking his email at work.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office says a man slipped behind the employee while he was on the patio of the restaurant. The worker says he felt something pushed against his back and was told to empty his pockets. He handed the robber $135 from his apron.
The man sped away in a black Chrysler.

The $400 million redevelopment of the Longboat Key Club has caused the town to take a closer look at its own zoning codes.

The Town Attorney recommended the commission address ambiguities as soon as possible.
The commission's workshop is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.
The Key Club plan recently received a major setback in the courts.

You still have time to enjoy the Manatee County Fair.

The fair features a wide range of entertainers, rides and food. Check out yourobserver.com for details and a photo gallery of the event.

The fair ends this Sunday.

The Lynches Pub and Grub restaurant on St. Armands Circle celebrated its 25hth anniversary over the weekend.

To mark the event, the pub featured roll-back prices, T-shirts and traditional Irish music. See more photos of the event on our website.

A special surprise this weekend during the Sunshine from Darkness Gala. The Sarasota Military Academy drum line presented the patriotic dessert. And there was a touching moment when 2012 Luminary Award honoree former Congressman Patrick Kennedy embraced his biggest fan and stepdaughter, Harper, calling her his first responder. The gala followed a packed house at the Van Wezel for a mental health research symposium. Sunshine from Darkness focuses on stopping the stigma of mental illness and raising funds for mental health research. See more video from the event and photos online.

Don’t miss our Web-only In the Kitchen video this week. Mary Elizabeth Carey of Longboat Key shares her recipe for salmon poached in champagne. Watch the full video and get the recipe on our website.
