Mote staff and volunteers released Myrtle, a 10-year-old loggerhead turtle, this morning off Lido Beach.

Mote staff rescued Myrtle Oct. 7, 2010, off the Venice Fishing Pier, where the turtle had been feeding on bait and was hooked repeatedly by anglers. Staff removed multiple hooks from Myrtle’s throat and skin, including a 7-inch shark hook, lodged in its shoulder.

Upon release, Myrtle took a slight detour to the left and then, with help from Mote caregivers, returned to sea.
