Girls Inc. in the midst of $150,000 matching campaign

Girls are learning the value of philanthropy Wednesday, Sept. 18, during Mighty Micro Match Day at Girls Inc. of Sarasota County. A small group of donors have challenged the girls to match the $150,000 pledge by Oct. 1.

Girls participate in a program called Micro Society in which all the girls have jobs and roles in a society just like they would in the real world. The girls get paid a paycheck in their own micro society currency like they would at a regular job and learn the value of management, payroll and responsibility.

Girls will pledge a certain dollar amount to match the $150,000 grant and Girls Inc. staff are looking for donors to match the micro society’s money. Girls will donate the money at their micro society bank called Dream Harbor Community Bank. Their goal is to raise $300,000 by Oct. 1.

The money will be used for scholarships and for supporting programs in the building overall.

“We promise them that we will find someone to match that money dollar for dollar to show them they made an impact too,” said Director of Community Relations Kay Mathers.

Girls who work in the bank business in the micro society have already pledged $500. Bank president Chrissy Lopez was the first to donate money to the matching campaign.
