While groups like Sarasota Bayfront 20:20 have begun developing a new vision for waterfront land east of the North Trail, the Florida Department of Transportation is advancing plans to transform nearby U.S. 41 from 10th Street to 14th Street.

The state will host an open house tonight at Van Wezel Performing Arts Center to reveal plans for two roundabouts, enhanced pedestrian walkways, narrower vehicle lanes and new landscaping, among other improvements. FDOT staff will not hold a formal presentation, but rather answer equations and take public input on the project.

The $7.9 million project would be the first of a $100 million network that calls for eight additional circular intersections to replace traffic lights along the bayfront.
