The town of Longboat Key needs to perform an assessment of Emerald Harbor Drive to find out why the road is sinking slightly and cracking.
Emerald Harbor resident Wayne Swift asked the town in February to look into cracking of the road that leads to rain and irrigation water accumulating on the road for long periods of time.
In the past, the town has repaired the road with potholes that quickly open back up again, according to Swift.
Issues with the road affect approximately 50 homes on Emerald Harbor Drive.
Swift said that longtime residents heard the road has issues because of buried pieces of trees that were cut down during the development of the lots.
A follow-up email sent to District 5 Commissioner Pat Zunz Dec. 19 inquired if the town has any plans to fix the road.
Zunz replied Monday by explaining the road issue will be investigated and fixed sometime after season as part of a road project.
Public Works Director Juan Florensa will have a construction timeline for the road project early next year. The first part of the two-phased project will be investigating what’s underneath the road that’s causing it to crack and sink.
