Aurora Melzer is a sophomore cross country and track and field runner at Lakewood Ranch High. Mustangs cross country coach Kristin Zarrella-Wikstrom said Melzer had a strong summer of workouts and should be an important contributor this season.

When did you start running competitively?

At the beginning of last school year. It was my first one at Lakewood Ranch. (Melzer moved from Cleveland, Ohio.) I played soccer previously too, but I stopped once I started running. It was a lot of time to commit, plus I wanted to channel my effort into one type of sport.

What is the appeal to you?

I like that it is more individual. All of your work goes toward yourself. I can't make a teammate go harder in practice but I can myself go harder. It is also a stress reliever for me. Sometimes I will go for a run if I need to relax.

Do you prefer cross country or track and field?

I liked cross country because of the scenery you get. I like the different events in track, but I probably like cross country a little more overall.

What is your favorite running memory?

When I set my personal record in the 3,200-meter run (11:51.40) at the Pepsi Florida Relays at the University of Florida last year. Two other girls (Mason Ingallinera and Emma Paliotta) also set PRs in the race. We all went to dinner afterward and it was such a good vibe. Everyone was happy.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Knowing I can push myself harder and not being able to do it. For some reason, I just don't do it (go faster) even though I can. It's a mental thing and I am going to break it. It's either that or the humidity, which is rough.

What is your goal for the season?

I want to get a sub-19 minute time in cross country.

What is your favorite food?

I like watermelon a lot.

What is your favorite subject?

I like math. I am good at it. I get into a groove when I am doing it.

What is your favorite movie?

I like any and all Disney movies.

Which superpower would you pick?

I would pick being able to fly. I could go wherever I want whenever I want. I could avoid paying for flights that way. I would also want to be able to talk with animals.

What is the best advice you have received?

Live life to the fullest and never be ungrateful for what you have.

Finish this sentence: "Aurora Melzer is … "

… Obnoxious, maybe? Or fun and talkative. I am a little of everything.
