To create more enjoyable strolls through downtown, the city’s Public Art Committee created a program that will place a dozen sculptures throughout the five shopping districts.

“I think it creates this vibrancy,” said committee member Virginia Hoffman, who came up with the idea.
On Wednesday, the committee chose the 12 works of art that will be featured on Main Street, Palm Avenue, Burns Square, Towles Court and the Rosemary District.

The sculptures will remain in place for a year, after which one of the 12 will be chosen as the recipient of a $20,000 award. That sculpture will then become a permanent fixture downtown.

“I hope this will be successful, and we can do it again and again,” Hoffman said.
