A Risso’s dolphin rescued Monday by Mote Marine Laboratory has died.

The dolphin stranded near Cannons Marina, 6040 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The dolphin had shark bite injuries and infections and was extremely emaciated, according to Hayley Rutger, public relations coordinator at Mote.

The laboratory will send out lab samples from the animal and keep its skeleton for research purposes.

“We’re going to learn as much as we can from it,” Rutger said.
