CVS customer thwarts armed robbery

Sarasota Police arrested a 65-year-old man for the alleged robbery of a CVS pharmacy Sunday, after a customer tackled the suspect., according to a news release.

Freddie Johnson threatened a clerk and pharmacists at the CVS at 2773 Fruitville Road, in an attempt to steal the prescription drugs Oxycodone and Hydrocodone. Johnson had a bandana over his face and implied he had a firearm during the incident, according to the probable cause affadavit.

Witness Jaanus Jurisoo, 33, pounced on Johnson and held the suspect down until officers arrived.

Police charged Johnson with one count of armed robbery, and are investigating him for an armed robbery that occured at Hedges Pharmacy in February.

Sarasota Police Capt. Patrick Robinson said in the release that the department applauds Jurisoo's actions, but advises witnesses to future crimes to call 911 and avoid confrontation.
