Let's face it: Coming into the new year, we all have our perfect weight goal in mind to achieve.

So, if you enjoy a cocktail every once in a while like I do, it's important to factor those calories into your diet as well. It's still possible to meet your health goals while enjoying the occasional cocktail. And you don't have to sacrifice flavor. Just like a beautiful entree, a cocktail should be full of fresh and vibrant flavors.

In an effort to reach my own goals for healthier living, I like to use gluten-free liquors. Seagram's, Tito's, Hendrick's and Chopin are all brands that fit the bill if gluten-free is for you.

Mixers are where you'll find most of the sugars and calories in a cocktail. So get rid of the cranberry and pineapple juices and opt for good old-fashioned spring water or soda water. In turn, this will hold the flavor of your infused alcohol, making a better-tasting drink.

The 2015 New-You Cocktail:

  • Select fresh berries (or apples, mangos or papayas). Even pomegranates work well.
  • Add to a mason jar and pour in the gluten-free alcohol of your choice.
  • Shake well.
  • Secure lid tightly and store in a cool dark room for five days, shaking twice daily.
  • After the five-day infusion, pour over ice and add a splash of soda water.
  • Enjoy!

(When garnishing, remember: Don't use maraschino cherries. They're loaded with sugar and red dye. This cocktail deserves a fresh slice of orange or a sprig of mint.)
