Cops Corner: Officer pulls struggling dog from canal

Sept. 1

Safe and sound
3:04 p.m., 500 block of Bayview Drive
Dog rescue: Police were called on a report of a dog struggling in the water after falling into a back yard canal. The caller said her neighbor’s dog couldn’t climb over the seawall on its own. The officer who responded reached down to the dog and pulled it to safety, The officer reported the dog was exhausted but otherwise OK. The officer found the owner and returned the dog to its home.

Sept. 2

I’m walkin’ here
10:22 a.m., 3500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Traffic: An officer stopped a Chevy SUV and spoke to the driver about crosswalk regulations after witnessing the vehicle slow but not stop while pedestrians were nearby. The driver explained she was unfamiliar with the rules, so the officer explained how typical crosswalks work and how Longboat Key’s flashing-light equipped versions work.

Power to the people
4:12 p.m., 6900 Poinsetta Avenue
Fire-rescue assist: A downed electrical wire attracted to the attention of emergency responders. A tree had fallen and pulled down the electrical connection to the house. Florida Power & Light was notified and cleared the officer from the scene upon the crew’s arrival.

Hear something, say something
8:37 p.m., 600 Lyons Lane
Disturbance: A caller, who did not want to meet with an officer, called to report the sound of a girl or woman yelling from a nearby swimming pool and was concerned something untoward was taking place. The officer arrived to find a group of children in the pool, screaming and horse playing.

Sept. 3

Alarming
11:03 .m., 300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Residential alarm: Police responded to a condominium to assist a homeowner who was on the scene with the proper passcode but couldn’t get the alarm to shut off. The homeowner told police he had lived in the same unit for years and had never had a problem with the alarm system until now.  When he called his alarm company for help, the homeowner was told no one could help him until the next morning.

Sept. 5

Trouble on the low seas
12:58 a.m., 700 block of Broadway
Disturbance: A man staying aboard a boat spotted his missing kayak tied to a nearby vessel and made his way over to investigate. A woman aboard said she had borrowed it from a shoreside spot and forgot to bring it back. Over the course of the conversation, the man said the tone changed and the woman pointed a flare gun at him. The man didn’t want to press charges and refused to sign a statement, saying he only wanted the incident documented. He was advised to stay away from the woman.
