7:35 a.m. — 300 block of Firehouse Court
Code Enforcement: A construction foreman told police he was performing his first construction job on the Key and he had no idea the town prevented construction noise before 8 a.m.
BUSINESS LOCKDOWN
11:20 p.m. — 5300 block of GMD
Security Check: Police found a door on the north side of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce building unlocked and a dry cleaner door unlocked next door. Nothing was missing from either business.
MOVING DAY
10:08 a.m. — 3300 block of GMD
Civil Disturbance: A woman told police she had moved into a friend’s home while she “stabilizes her life,” but the friend wanted her to move out immediately. Police talked to the owner of the condominium and she confirmed her friend is no longer a compatible roommate and she wants her out immediately. Police advised that the woman has established residency there and she must follow the standard eviction protocol. But later that day police observed the woman’s peaceful departure.
GOVERNMENT SPY?
12:24 p.m. — 100 block of Sands Point Road
Suspicious Circumstance: A property manager told police unit owners reported seeing a large drone with red lights flashing near the beach the night before. The residents didn’t wish to file a report and just wanted to know if the drone belonged to the government. Police couldn’t answer the question but advised it was probably a privately-owned drone.
GAS GRAB
4:06 p.m. — 700 block of Hideaway Bay Lane
Boat Larceny: A boat owner told police he believes someone stole 30 to 40 gallons worth of gas, which amounts to $175 worth of fuel, from his boat’s fuel tanks.
RENTAL FRAUD
12:07 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD
Fraud: A woman told police she wired $3,750 to the landlord of a Players Club unit she agreed to rent. But it turns out the woman she was dealing with scammed her and stole her money.
FOOD FIGHTERS
4:18 p.m. — 4100 block of GMD
Disturbance: A restaurant employee told police he got into an argument with another employee in the kitchen, which led to his co-worker brushing a knife against his arm and making threats that he was going to kill him. The co-worker told police he got into an argument but at no time did he threaten his co-worker with a knife. The restaurant fired the employee who had the knife in his hand, and he was given a ride to Anna Maria Island.
BOAT BUST
4:05 p.m. — 700 block of Broadway
Boat Violation: Marine patrol noticed a man trying unsuccessfully to get his boat off the Jewfish Key sandbar. The man eventually “gunned the motor” and got it off the sandbar by “flinging saltwater and sand for several feet in all directions.” The boat then sped away faster than allowed and created a mild wake. When a nearby U.S. Coast Guard boat activated its lights, the man walked away from the helm of the boat, causing it to spin out of control and weave into the path of oncoming boats. When marine patrol was able to get his attention and stop his boat, the man appeared “glassy-eyed” and had slurred speech. An officer took control of the boat and docked it in the Village while road patrol arrived. He was issued a citation that requires a court date for recklessly operating a boat without the proper boating card. Another passenger on the boat with proper identification was allowed to drive the boat back to its dock while marine patrol followed them.
PIPE PROBLEMS
7:47 a.m. — Intersection of GMD and Companion Way
Assist Other Agency: Police responded to a water leak and found water emerging from a sewer line under the road. Public Works employees responded quickly and dug up the road to fix the leak.
GUIDING LIGHT
8:24 a.m. — 4100 block of GMD
Code Enforcement: A man reported that a bright light coming from a Key restaurant was causing problems with area boaters navigating their canal at night. Some boaters were striking canal markers because the light was blinding them. The code enforcement officer made plans to investigate.
CHARGES CANCELED
10:21 a.m. — 400 block of L’Ambiance Drive
Fraud: A woman reported that several charges were made to her Mastercard that she didn’t make. She canceled the card and needed a police report for the identity theft case.
EMPTY THE TANK
Noon — 500 block of Wedge Lane
Gas Leak: A report of a gas leak led police to discover a propane gas leak in the neighborhood. Traffic control was performed while firefighter/paramedics emptied the leaking propane tank.
BEACH BAG THEFT
12:05 p.m. — 5300 block of GMD
Stolen Property: A man told police he believes someone stole his wife’s iPhone from a beach bag while they were swimming in the Gulf.
FALSE ALARM
4:49 p.m. — 3500 block of Fair Oaks Lane
Fire Alarm: A man was surprised when police and firefighter/paramedics responded to a fire alarm alert coming from his house. There was no fire or any signs of a fire in the area. Firefighters surmised two fire alarms malfunctioned.
LICENSE LOST
8:32 a.m. — 4700 block of GMD
Lost Property: A woman told police she thinks that when she was walking along the beach, her driver’s license fell out of her pocket when she grabbed her phone. She couldn’t find it, and police explained how she could acquire a replacement license.
DOGS GONE WILD
7:17 a.m. — 600 block of Dream Island Road
Animal Nuisance: A neighbor complained her neighbor’s dogs were running loose in the neighborhood. Police found the neighbor’s door wide open and the dog owner told police her dogs must have pushed the door open. She promised to lock the door to prevent them from getting out.
