10:32 a.m. — 5000 block of GMD
Traffic: A man was pulled over for an unreadable tag on his trailer. The man told police he’s been bugging his boss for a week to fix the tag. Police then discovered the man was pulling the trailer without the proper driver’s license class. His driver’s license was also confiscated after a check revealed he had three suspensions. Someone came to pick up the truck and trailer.
Smoke but no fire
10:41 a.m. — 700 block of Broadway
Fire: A restaurant manager reported a possible fire because he saw smoke coming out of an air-conditioning vent near the bar and saw smoke rising from a vent on the roof when he went outside. The manager evacuated employees from the restaurant until firefighter/paramedics confirmed the cause was an air-handler motor that burned out. Employees were allowed back in the building before the lunch-hour crowd showed up.
A grandmother’s intuition
3:05 p.m. — 3600 block of Fair Oaks Place
Phone Call Scam: A woman received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson, saying he was in a jail in Virginia and needed bail money. The woman hung up on the caller after explaining he didn’t sound at all like her real grandson. She asked for extra patrol because the call concerned her.
Out-of-town charge
4:53 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD
Fraud: A man reported his credit card company alerted him of a $3.56 charge to his card made in Virginia while he was on Longboat Key. The account was closed, and he was issued a new card. He told police he purchased gas at a station in Sarasota with the card the day before the charge was made. Police advised him to monitor his bank accounts and credit card purchases closely and to advise the credit bureaus to put a fraud alert on his accounts.
Up on the housetop
8:11 p.m. — 6500 block of GMD
Suspicious Circumstance: A woman reported a man on her neighbor’s roof after dark. Police found a roofer, who said he delivered materials to the wrong roof and was retrieving the materials to take them to the right address before roofers arrived in the morning. Police allowed him to gather the materials.
Sent packing
1:35 a.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road
Code Enforcement: A man was issued a written warning for walking in a construction area of the beach. A check of his bag and his driver’s license came back clean, and police sent him on his way.
Busted on the beach
1:12 a.m. — 7100 block of GMD
Code Enforcement: Seven teenagers were warned they were trespassing on a closed-off section of the beach where two groins are being constructed. Their parents arrived to pick them up.
Screening test
2:33 p.m. — 600 block of Binnacle Point Drive
Attempted Burglary: A woman was cleaning her mother’s house and noticed a sliding window open in a back room. Further investigation revealed that her mother’s master bedroom outside window screen on the other side of the house was lying on the ground outside. Nothing was missing from the home and police saw no signs of forced entry, but police believe the screen couldn’t have fallen out from window because it fits firmly in place when installed. Neighbors saw no one and reported nothing suspicious.
Pickup supervision
3:13 p.m. — 500 block of Ed Lee Lane
Civil Disturbance: A woman arranged with police to go to her vacation home on the Key and retrieve her belongings. Her husband wasn’t home and left her belongings packed in the middle of the floor. She said the only thing missing was her computer, and she made plans to call Apple to disable her computer.
Forgotten at the fuel pump
5:45 p.m. — 400 block of GMD
Found Property: A gas station manager turned over a wallet he found on the top of a pump. Police were unable to locate a phone number to contact the man and placed it into a property locker in the hopes he will call to report the missing wallet.
Replacement driver
7:13 p.m. — 5800 block of GMD
Traffic: A woman received a ticket for driving with an expired driver’s license. Her husband arrived to pick her up.
Open door
1:36 a.m. — 200 block of GMD
Alarm: Police responded to a restaurant alarm and found a door to a second-story deck unlocked. Nothing was out of place, and the restaurant was locked up.
Burning mulch
1:46 p.m. — 5400 block of Sandhamn Place
Brush Fire: A woman smelled smoke and saw an area of mulch smoldering next to a pool. Firefighter/paramedics saturated the mulch and found nothing that could have ignited it.

5:28 p.m. — 300 block of Firehouse Court
Code Enforcement: A general contractor performing his first job on Longboat Key received a written warning for running a generator past 5 p.m., which violates the town’s noise ordinance.
