9:21 a.m., 700 block of Linley Street
Boat: A sailboat improperly moored at the Linley Street boat ramp drew the attention of a caller to police. An officer learned from the boat’s operator that a propeller malfunction prompted the unusual move, and that he was waiting for a mechanic to come. He said he would be on his way as soon as possible.
Sick?
11:16 p.m., 7000 block of Seabreeze Avenue
Animal call: Police responded to a report of a possibly sick coyote. The officer sent to investigate could not find the animal.
You’ve been warned
12:36 p.m., 3000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Traffic: A driver was issued a written warning after an officer spotted her car fail to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The officer reported the pedestrian had just activated the flashing lights and the driver had ample time to stop. The New York driver said she was unaware she was required to stop. A few minutes later, another driver, this one from Michigant, was similarly warned.

1:21 p.m., off the Key
Boating incident: Police were alerted to two kayakers in the Gulf of Mexico who appeared to be in distress. Contacted by the police department’s marine unit, the kayakers said they were fine.
No sign of trouble
2:54 p.m., 500 Ketch Lane
Suspicious circumstance: A resident returning home from vacation out of town alerted police to a possible break in. The resident showed an officer some insulation on the garage floor and evidence of an attic-access panel being moved. With no other signs of a burglary, the officer reported severe weather and winds in the area likely shifted the plywood panel.

10:30 p.m., 300 block of North Shore Road
Suspicious vehicle: Police checking on a car illegally parked on North Shore Road encountered a 40-year-old man with his eyes closed in the drivers seat. With all checks on the vehicle coming back clean, the man was told he couldn’t stay there. He said he would head back to his parents’ home in Bradenton.
Floating (away) dock
10:59 a.m., off the Key
Boating incident: Police in the department’s marine patrol boat towed a small, floating dock out of the boating channel and tied it securely to a seawall near the Dry Dock Restaurant. No markings were found, and the Department of Public Works was notified.
Lost and found
3:32 p.m., Bayfront Park
Found property: Police found an unattended backpack containing about $12 in belongings. The Minnie Mouse-styled backpack contained toys, a small amount of perfume, tissues, a heart-shaped lock and key and some candy. No children were nearby. The backpack was taken to the police department for safe keeping.
No drinking, eh?
4:12 p.m., 2000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Suspicious person: Police advised a group of eight Canadian tourists that alcohol was not permitted on Longboat Key beaches. They were playing cornhole and drinking alcohol at the time. After learning about the town’s rules, the group left the beach and apologized.
Maybe a little too quick
10:51 a.m., 1000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Traffic violation: Police pulled over a red Audi after seeing it cross the centerline, prompting another driver to brake. The Audi driver, who had pulled out from side street, said he might have done so too quickly and crossed the line. He was issued a verbal warning.
Disappearing dog
1 p.m., 400 block of Longboat Club Road
Animal on the beach: Police received a report of a dog on the beach and spoke to the security guard at the Sanctuary, who said he did not call. Officers checked the beach, with no sign of a dog. They spoke to several nearby residents, who said they didn’t see a dog on the beach.

12:16 p.m., 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway
Traffic accident: A driver was cited for improper backing in connecting with a parking lot collision. The cited driver told police he was backing his vehicle when it hit the other vehicle. Damage was consistent with the driver’s description.
Bad news on New Year’s Eve
10:41 p.m., 6500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Animal incident: A police officer called to the scene of a dog being hit by a car on Gulf of Mexico Drive learned the owner’s address through an online search of a serial number on a dog tag. The officer went to the owner’s house nearby to tell them the dog had died. The owner removed the remains from the roadway.

11:08 a.m., 500 block of Broadway.
Vandalism: A resident called police to report damage intentionally done to her mailbox – for the third time. Tire tracks were present near the mailbox but there were no witnesses to the incident.
Not-so-happy New Year
6:43 p.m., 1000 block of Longboat Club Road
Fireworks: Police spoke to a man about some New Year’s Day fireworks and the fire danger they presented. The fireworks had stopped about 10 minutes before the officer’s arrival. The man said he was finished with his fireworks, and was given a verbal warning.

6:48 p.m., 5300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Lost property: A man came to police headquarters to report a missing $200 pocket knife. The man told police he had been eating at a restaurant with friends the day before and set his pocket knife on the table. After leaving, he realized he had forgotten the knife and returned to the restaurant, where the manager told him his employees wouldn't take something that didn't belong to them from a table. An officer who checked on the report at the restaurant was told no one there knew anything about the missing knife.

1:10 a.m., 700 block of St. Judes Drive
Suspicious person: While on patrol, an officer spotted a man in a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants riding a bicycle without a headline along St. Judes Drive South. When the officer turned his car around to speak with the man, the officer reported the man fled into Joan Durante Park. A search of the area turned up nothing, and a subsequent search of the nearby neighborhood turned up nothing out of the ordinary.
