City Commissioners will discuss a resolution Monday Oct. 5 that would oppose the approval of offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in areas other than those already approved for it.

The resolution would also support the current policy of not allowing the expansion of oil and gas drilling in the Gulf and would encourage the use of alternative energy sources, such as solar.

The city cites the fact that the local economy depends on tourism, so it wants to keep the water free of “unsightly oil rigs” and the possibility of oil spills.
