City may create Newtown historic district

City commissioners approved a proposal May 18 that would create a Newtown Conservation Historic District.

At the urging of Commissioner Fredd Atkins, the city may spend up to $50,000 to hire a consultant to research and prepare an application for historic designation.

The consultant would document the history and culture of Newtown, record Newtown’s oral tradition, develop a walking tour and create a map of the proposed district’s boundaries, which are roughly Myrtle Street to the north, 17th Street to the south, the railroad corridor between Lemon Avenue and Leon Avenue to the west and U.S. 301 to the east.
