Craig Cerrata, a Racing Dog Rescue Project volunteer, was the guest speaker at the March 1 meeting of the Women’s Club of Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian.
“Despite their size and aggressive running, greyhounds are very gentle and definitely a people’s dog,” Cerrata said. “They like to be where you are.”
Cerrata said most of the greyhounds race only two or three seasons and then are retired. It takes about $275 in veterinarian services to prepare a dog for adoption.
The local rescue organization was formed 15 years ago and adopts out about 75 dogs a year.
Last year, the organization purchased a horse stable with some acreage, and, with volunteer help and donations of materials, it has been renovated and can accommodate 30 dogs.
