Busy month for SKA

The drop in bed tax collections may make May look like a slow month on the island, but the May 3 meeting of the Siesta Key Association ran nearly 20 minutes overtime proving there’s no rest for Siesta locals.

Catherine Luckner, president of SKA, presented some environmental issues — one of the longer lists she has seen. This included an update on the iguanas believed to be living on Siesta Key, which she says has dropped from four or five to two.

Representing the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce and the Siesta Village Maintenance Corp., Mark Smith expressed some frustration about an issue that has seen little change: the request for proposal for a new contractor to maintain the Village.

“I requested that the sidewalk be pressure washed months ago,” Smith said, “And they’re (Sarasota County) getting right on it.”

Russell Matthes, president of the Siesta Key Village Association, said he wants to get maintenance out of County hands as soon as possible. “Our tax dollars are paying for it so we need to have control over it,” he said.
