+ Universal Windows buys 3M retailer
Bradenton-based Universal Windows Solutions, which has a showroom in the Centre Shops, announced that it has purchased Hurricane Glass Shield’s 3M retailer dealership. Hurricane Glass Shield, the area’s largest dealer/installer of 3M security/solar films, has now changed from being a retail dealer/installer to distributor.

“We have been in the new construction and window-replacement business since 1981 with thousands of windows, doors and hurricane shutter installations,” said Universal Windows Solutions CEO Bob Smith. “This acquisition might be the most important strategic move we have seen yet.”

+ Volunteers needed for retirement boards
The town of Longboat Key is accepting applications for appointment to the Police Officers’ Retirement System board of trustees and Firefighters’ Retirement System board of trustees through 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Town Commission will consider applicants and make appointments at its Sept. 14 regular meeting. + Estuary program offers grants
The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program is currently offering applications for the 2010 Bay Partners Grants. Grants of up to $2,000 will be awarded to businesses, non-profit organizations, schools, academic institutions and civic organizations in Sarasota and Manatee counties that have projects that will benefit Sarasota Bay. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the SBEP office, 111 S. Orange Ave., Suite 200 W., Sarasota. For information, call 955-8085.
