+ Younger submits election paperwork
Phillip Younger, a Key resident and a Longboat Key Public Interest Committee board of director, has submitted election paperwork at Town Hall for the At-large Longboat Key Town Commission seat, according to Town Clerk Trish Granger.

Younger, who performed a town budget analysis this year along with Key resident Lenny Landau in an attempt to get the commission to cut additional costs, must submit paperwork to the supervisor of elections office before he is certified as a candidate.

If both Younger and current At-large Commissioner Hal Lenobel both become certified for two-year terms, it will be the first time Lenobel has ever been challenged for a commission seat.

Other potential candidates for the March election include former Planning and Zoning Board Chairman David Brenner and IPOC Chairman Bob White, who have yet to decide whether they will vie for a commission seat.

Longboat Key District 3 Commissioner Peter O’Connor has already submitted his election paperwork at Town Hall and officially been certified as a candidate for his final two-year term. Lenobel and Vice Mayor and District 5 Commissioner Robert Siekmann have picked up paperwork at Town Hall for additional two-year terms.

Commissioners term-limit out after three, two-year terms, which means Mayor Lee Rothenberg’s District 1 seat is also up for grabs this March.

+ Moore’s to request zoning change
The Planning and Zoning Board’s Tuesday, Sept. 15 regular meeting agenda includes a request by Alan Moore, owner of Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant & Marina, to change his commercially-zoned property from commercial to residential.

The restaurant, located at 800 Broadway, is no longer for sale, and Moore said the rezoning allows him more flexibility for his property and loan portfolio.

+ No garbage pickup on Labor Day
There will be no Longboat Key garbage or recycling pickup Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of Labor Day.

The alternate holiday pickup for garbage will be Saturday, Sept. 5. Please place items at the curb by 7 a.m. Saturday.

+ Lane closures on Cortez Bridge
The Florida Department of Transportation will begin painting the Cortez Bridge Monday, Sept. 14, which will result in occasional single-lane traffic with flagging operations and short closures.
