Are you smarter than a middle schooler?

Well, can you name a country the Equator doesn't cross?

An answer is Guatemala, as provided by sixth-through eighth-grade students at Braden River Middle School who participated in the school's annual Geography Bee.

Feb. 2, 35 students took turns answering questions about countries, from location to capitals and other brain busters.

The school has offered the event for the last 15 years, social studies teacher Chris Brown said.

"A lot of schools stopped hosting these types of events, because of the emphasis on testing," Brown said. "But it's good for students to learn where things are and for them to have some competition."

To qualify for the Bee, students had to complete a pre-test.

The winner of Braden River's event, which will be announced later today, will receive $50 and will take an online test to determine whether they qualify for the Florida Geographic Bee, to be held April 1.

The National Geographic Bee will take place from May 22 through May 25 in Washington D.C. There, students will compete for $15,000, $25,000 and $50,000 scholarships.

Let's put your geography knowledge to the test.
