Just in time for the Labor Day weekend, Beach Access 12 on the south end of Key re-opened Friday afternoon.

The access closed Aug. 1 to enable county workers to improve drainage and realign the parking spaces. The project included a turnaround area at the western end of the access, so people parking there no longer would have to back out onto Midnight Pass Road.

Brad Robertson, an engineer in the county’s Public Works department, told the Pelican Press he and other county staff had completed a final walk-through of the access Friday. He was expecting the barricades to traffic to come down during the afternoon.

“We just have some minor work left,” he said.

A few parking spaces may be blocked off next week to facilitate, he said.

Although the Key experienced several thunderstorms this summer, Robertson said the contractor’s employees “were able to do the work around the rain. I guess it rained at the right time.”
