Because the area is experiencing freezing temperatures, Manatee County residents are being encouraged to protect their backflow devices.

The Manatee County Utilities Department said residents can protect the devices by covering them with a blanket or sheet and Duct tape it securely, insulating exposed pipes or purchasing specially-made covers.

If the assembly freezes or fails to work, owners should call a plumber or the tester who certified it last for repairs.

Property owners are responsible for the maintenance of the backflow devices, which are used to protect water supplies from contamination or pollution.
