ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Charlie George

Ten-year-old Charlie George caught every inning of the District 26 Little League All-Star Tournament and made several key plays behind the plate, helping lead the Manatee East 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars to an 8-1 record and a district championship. The Gullett Elementary fifth-grader also maintained a .350 batting average, a .536 on base percentage and a .550 slugging percentage. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

How does it feel to be a district champion?
It’s great. You get the respect, and you get to represent your Little League.

What’s the toughest part about being a catcher?
The responsibility — not letting any balls get passed you.

How did you get into baseball?
I started when I was 3 years old. I just started playing T-ball, and I kept going.

Who is your favorite baseball player?
Jorge Posada. He’s a catcher, and my last name is Jorge in Spanish.

Do you play any other sports?
I play basketball and football.

Of the three sports, which is your favorite?
Basketball. I was born in a basketball state. Baseball wasn’t real popular.

Where were you born?
Louisville, Ky. I moved to Florida when I was 7 years old.

If you could go anywhere on vacation this summer, where would it be and why?
Nova Scotia. It’s got a cool name. It’s got to have some interesting places there.

What’s your favorite movie?
“The Dark Knight.” I love Batman.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
The ability to freeze people. The world would be a lot slower (then), and I’d have more time to think and stuff.

If you could eat one thing all the time, what would it be?
Glazed donuts — if my mom let me.
