As the commission turns

Some of the drama that plays out in the Town Commission chambers seems to mimic a real-life soap opera.

I never thought I’d see the day when I used the words ‘Longboat Key’ and ‘redneck’ in the same sentence.

About Kurt Schultheis

Kurt Schultheis, City Editor for The Longboat Observer since February 2007, covers everything pertaining to Longboat Key.  A sampling of Schultheis’ sometimes sane and sometimes zany Longboat Key coverage includes sitting through meetings at Town Hall that can drag on close to the midnight hour, chasing the ambulances to discover someone has driven through a hedge or a storefront, writing the popular Cops Corner feature and monitoring the beach, trying to figure out why the sand isn’t white enough or why it’s disappearing in certain places around the Key. Speaking of beaches and ways to hold the sand on the Key, no reporter  has ever used the word “groin” more often in stories.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2001, Schultheis has worked at several Florida newspapers before making his way to Longboat Key, including The Orlando Sentinel, The Orlando Business Journal and The Bradenton Herald.
