The Casey Key estate that had been the most expensive home listing ever in Sarasota County at $20.03 million has sold for $10.8 million total, more than two years after it went on the market.
The "Sugar Bay" estate at 1538 N. Casey Key Road was originally listed for sale in March 2007. It consists of two homes on about four acres, which are just three properties away from the northern tip of Casey Key.
The estate was broken up into two sections less than a year later. The first part was sold in February 2008 for $4.6 million to Haji Tehrani and Sherry Hocking, of Granger, Ind. The second part sold July 27 to a private trust for $6.2 million.
Signature Sotheby's International Realty was the firm that sold the Casey Key estate.
The main home is 7,000 square feet and is made of fossilized coral. The original owner bought a stone quarry in Mexico specifically to mine the materials to build the home.
Everything inside the main home is handmade. Intricate designs with an ocean theme — fish, shells, etc., — extend from the walls and can be seen on both floors. A winding staircase leads up to three bedroom suites.
Downstairs are a custom wine cellar, home theater and a game room.
A 1,000-square-foot Bermuda-style guesthouse rests behind a stone pool, waterfall and tennis court.
The property also has 300 feet of private Gulf beach.
