Florida’s Children First will honor child advocates in Sarasota at its annual fundraising and awards event. Community and business leaders, and all other persons concerned about the future of Florida’s children, especially abused, abandoned and neglected children and youth, will be in attendance. HONORING: Senator Nancy Detert, Child Advocate of the Year Senator Detert has been a member of the Florida Senate since 2008, representing the 28th District, which includes Sarasota County and parts of Charlotte County. Senator Detert sits on the Children, Families, and Elder Affairs committee and is a driving force behind this year’s major child welfare legislation which allows for a sense of normalcy in the lives of children in foster care by letting them engage in extracurricular activities and extends foster care to young people up to age 21, instead of 18. Senator Detert will be honored by Florida’s Children First and Florida Youth Shine, FCF’s youth advocacy organization, for her continued fight for the rights of children in foster care. Robert Stalker, Youth Honoree Robert Stalker entered foster care at age 8. Since then, he has been in and out of care—including relative care—until he aged out at 18. Robert was first introduced to Florida Youth Shine (FYS), Florida’s Children First youth advocacy organization, when he began working with his local CBC. He has been an active FYS member since January 2012 when he attending his first statewide meeting during Children’s Week. Robert is currently on his second term as the Statewide Fundraising Chair for FYS and believes that the voice of former foster youth can have a positive impact on people around the state.
