The Jazz Club of Sarasota's Joy of Jazz concert series kicks off with David Pruyn and The Paramount Swing 6, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, in Centennial Park in downtown Venice. The concert is free but donations are accepted in support of the Jazz Club’s scholarship fund. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. For more information, call 366-1552. The series is sponsored by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. New Orleans native David Pruyn is a musician and conductor who has performed with many jazz greats, including Chick Corea, Mel Torme, Steve Lawrence, Frank Sinatra Jr., Al Jarreau, Rosemary Clooney, Edie Gorme, the Manhattan Transfer and Harry Connick Jr. Pruyn's band, The Paramount Swing 6, consists of Tom Ellison playing saxes and flute, Greg Nielsen on trombone, Dick Reynolds on piano, Bruce Wallace on bass, and Rich MacDonald on drums. They will be performing music from The Great American Songbook with some big band era favorites thrown in.
