The Perlman Music Program Sarasota Winter Residency, presented by The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast, will hold a cello master class, chorus rehearsal and student recital Thursday, Jan. 3, at USF Sarasota-Manatee. The cello master class takes place at 11 a.m., the chorus rehearsal takes place at 5 p.m. and the student recital takes place at 7 p.m. The Perlman Music Program Sarasota Winter Residency offers training for students who come from around the world to study and play violin, viola, cello and bass with esteemed mentors, including Itzhak Perlman. Free public events include orchestra and chorus rehearsals, master classes and student recitals. Q&A sessions with Itzhak Perlman and PMP students and faculty follow many events. These free events take place in a heated outdoor performance tent on the grounds of the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. Tickets will be available at the rotunda on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 to Monday, Dec. 10 (except Sunday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, 9). Tickets will also be available at Pritchard Pianos, 2108 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, and Pritchard Pianos, 1855 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3. Dates and times of distribution and events are subject to change. Updates are available online at PMPSuncoast.org.

Children from all over Sarasota County participated in the 2013 Sarasota Kiwanis Spelling Bee Program Friday, May 17 at the Lee Wetherington Boys and Girls Club. More than 100 third and fourth graders in bright yellow t – shirts competed to show off their skills and win one of three cash prizes. Booker High School and Sarasota High School Key Club sold pizza for $1 a slice and parents quizzed children in preparation for the spelling bee. -
