Robert Martini stormed out of the Gulf on Siesta Key during the 2011 James "Mac" McCarthy Southeast Regional Lifeguard Competition. Shayna Munson went for the ball during the Dig the Beach tournament July 9. The Observer Group, which bought the Pelican Press in June, published its first edition of the paper July 14, taking the Pelican back to its Siesta roots. County staff was alarmed about losing a grant for stormwater drainage improvements on Siesta beach. Beth Owen-Cipielewski prepared to compete on Team USA in the Tournament of the Americas; her team won two gold medals.
