Siesta Key Village incompatible with noise ordinance

Siesta Key Village incompatible with noise ordinance

Sarasota County code-enforcement officer Kevin Burns gave Siesta Key Association members working on noise issues vindication March 7, when he revealed the results of a comprehensive sound study.

Blasé Cafe hasn’t violated the county’s noise ordinance, which regulates sound levels from property lines. Normally noise tapers off as sound waves travel away from a source.

But, a sound vortex, created by the environment and architecture of buildings on the south end of the Village, makes amplified sound to residents in the Terrace Condominium Complex as it is from the property line at Blasé Café, Burns explained.

As a short-term solution, Blasé Café staff will angle speakers toward the Gulf of Mexico.

A long-term solution will come as the county re-works the noise ordinance, which is set to expire in November.

Many can't make it to the SKA meetings and they rely upon news outlets for their info.
If the article is incorrect, it would behoove someone from the SKA or County staff to get wih the reporter and get the accurate information out to the public.

  • The word vortex was not used at the meeting, the word vertex was. In describing the point where two buildings meet at a right angle the words "geometric vertex" were used.
Hope this helps clear things up.

  • I would be curious to know who conducted this "comprehensive study" and their professional credentials. A vortex is a region of matter where the flow is mostly a spinning motion about an imaginary axis, straight or curved. Vortices are often formed by the winds surrounding hurricanes, tornadoes, dust devils and the wake of airplanes. I would like to know the source of the vortex that is causing the sound to remain just as loud when it reaches the condos as it is at the property line of the restaurant.

  • I hope someone at SKA and the County will at the least google , if not speak to an accredited expert, regarding this "sound vortex" theory before they go changing ordinances.. Especially since the term"sound vortex' is being incorrectly used inthis situation.
