Community members joined hands Saturday, May 18 on Siesta Key beach as a symbol of their support for the protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. Supporters voiced their concern about damage that happens due to offshore oil drilling accidents, hydraulic fracturing, the Alberta tar sands, mountain top removal mining, and about coal fired power plants. Forty-two people joined hands for the Hands Across the Sand national movement.

Sarasota Christian School eighth-grader Shane Shifflett went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs, a run scored and an intentional walk to lead the Blazers to a 6-5 victory over Canterbury School of Florida in the Class 2A-Region 2 semifinals May 7.

Upper-elementary students at The NewGate School celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a salsa-garden harvest Monday, May 6. Students harvested the vegetables they had been growing since February in their garden.
