The Humane Society of Sarasota County will host its magical Harry Potter-themed event, Muggles 4 Mutts, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the HSSC Education Center, 2331 15th St., Sarasota.

Children from all over Sarasota County participated in the 2013 Sarasota Kiwanis Spelling Bee Program Friday, May 17 at the Lee Wetherington Boys and Girls Club. More than 100 third and fourth graders in bright yellow t – shirts competed to show off their skills and win one of three cash prizes. Booker High School and Sarasota High School Key Club sold pizza for $1 a slice and parents quizzed children in preparation for the spelling bee. -
