Students discover science of life

Students in the environmental-science program at McIntosh Middle School recently visited Selby Gardens for hands-on botanical research experiments. The students compared soil samples to measure for organic versus inorganic matter and used a turkey baster and a sieve to examine the tanks of bromeliads for microorganisms.

In an effort to recognize all of Sarasota’s local veterans, Ken Chester, owner of Chester’s Reef in Gulf Gate, hosted a Veteran’s Appreciation Day event in front of his bar Saturday, Oct. 13. The event featured live music, food, raffles and prizes, and all the proceeds benefited the Wounded Warrior Project.

Second graders at Out-of-Door Academy crossed the mulch Thursday, May 23 as a symbolic gesture of the lower level entering the higher-level building next year. Third graders crossed the mulch on Tuesday, May 21 but the second graders – next year’s third graders – will be the first second graders to cross the mulch and be in the new building. Out-of-Door Academy donated the left over food to the Salvation Army. Approximately 38 children played games and later crossed the courtyard as parents snapped photographs. -
