The Sarasota County Bar Association honored two members and a layperson for their service and commitment to the community at its annual awards ceremony Sept. 17, at Michael’s On East.

The Hon. John Scheb received the C.L. McKaig Award for his service as a military serviceman, city attorney, municipal judge and appellate judge. Scheb wrote several books on law and procedure and helped found the local American Inn of Court, named in his honor in 1991.

The Distinguished Community Service Award was given to attorney Thomas Shults for his outstanding and dedicated service as a volunteer, director and president of Mental Health Community Centers.

Mimi Goodwill, scholarship coordinator for the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, received the Layperson Distinguished Service Award for her role in the establishment and administration of the SCBA Diversity Intern Scholarship Program. The SCBA has raised $35,000 since 2006 and has awarded seven scholarships to summer interns.
