Local band, the Garbage Men, is raising funds to take its act to the Big Apple. The group that plays homemade instruments made from recycled knickknacks and donates money to charities and eco-friendly causes, has shows lined up in Times Square, The New York Hall of Science, The Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Fort Tryon Park and other venues. The band will donate its tips to the NYC Police Athletic League.
In an effort to raise funds, the group has started a KickStarter page, where fans can donate money to help pay for the trip. The page can be found at http://kck.st/L5xl4D.

Sarasota Memorial names new CEO
The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board named former Sarasota Memorial Chief Operating Officer David Verinder as CEO in a unanimous vote Friday. Verinder has served as interim CEO since the departure of Gwen MacKenzie in May.
Preliminary city millage rate stays flat
Despite a $3.6 million general fund deficit, the Sarasota City Commission voted to keep the property tax rate level, opting to explore other avenues for balancing the budget.
