Jean Maxwell Catsakis, chairman of commemorative events for the Sara De Soto Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, reminds us next Wednesday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day.
This is the day to honor Sarasota County’s more than 50,000 veterans. As usual, there will be a parade down Main Street, starting at 10 a.m., followed by a ceremony at Hamil Park at Main and Gulf Stream.
On Siesta Key, a memorial service will be held for the late Capt. Ralph E. Styles, a heroic submarine captain who became known locally for his daily ritual of lowering the flag at sunset on his front lawn. He did this every day until he died last year at age 98.
A commemorative plaque will be dedicated Wednesday in his honor just before sunset at Ocean Drive and Canal Road on Siesta Key.
