The city of Sarasota has scheduled a public workshop on citywide mobility.
City planners will discuss mobility for vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit. Public input will help guide future transportation policy updates.
The workshop will be held Thursday, Nov. 1, at the SRQ Studio in the Sarasota City Hall Annex, 1565 First Street, in two sessions from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
City planners have recognized the need to tie land use and mobility together as a way to encourage desired redevelopment in targeted areas, according to a press release from the city. Components of a mobility plan would include a downtown circulator assessment, a financing strategy, a strategy to identify specific areas where land use can support multimodal travel, and an assessment of complete streets. The goal is to create a transportation grid that accommodates bicycles, pedestrians, and public transit, in addition to vehicle traffic.
Another meeting will be held on Nov. 15 to specifically discuss the downtown circulator, including the possibility of a streetcar downtown.

- Don't be fooled by the PR. This so-called Mobility Plan is actually an Immobility Plan, to bring gridlock to our roads. City staff (supported so far by a 3 to 2 vote of the City Commission) proposes to repeal concurrency, the rule that developers may not create excessive traffic congestion, in most of the City. The crazy idea is to let the roads become so crowded that people instead are somehow forced to use other forms of transportation, as if buses don't get caught in traffic too and auto trips can generally be replaced with bikes and walking. It is an irresponsible giveaway of the public interest to the big developers who more than even now control City Hall. Attend the November 1 workshops and let them know this is unacceptable!
- And then we can all sing gumbaya together and beat our drums.
