+ First swine-flu vaccine doses arrive
More than 2,000 doses of the swine-flu vaccine were delivered to Sarasota County last week.
The FluMist nasal spray is available through private pediatrician offices and is only being offered to healthy people between 2 and 49 years of age.
The county is expecting to receive more shipments of FluMist nasal spray each week.
Higher-risk patients, such as pregnant women and children under 2, will need to receive an injection, and the county health department expects those vaccines to arrive later this month.
Call the Sarasota County flu information line at 861-2800.
+ Osprey road closed up to two weeks
Construction on West Bay Street in Osprey will force its closure for 10 to 14 days, beginning Monday, Oct. 26.
The county is installing a 16-inch force main on West Bay Street, which will take wastewater from the U.S. 41 corridor to the Central County Water Reclamation Facility.
Both the northbound and southbound turn lanes onto the roadway will also be closed, but the turn lanes onto East Bay Street will remain open.
Northbound traffic will detour onto Holland Street, and southbound traffic will be re-routed to Shumard Street.
+ Red Bug Slough meeting set
Residents will be able to give their input into a project to improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat and install native plants at Red Bug Slough Preserve, a 72-acre county-run preserve at 5200 Beneva Road.
A public meeting will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Bee Ridge Park, 4430 S. Lockwood Ridge Road.
County staff will record comments on the plan.
