+ Commission OK’s parking deal
City Commissioners approved an agreement with the Sarasota Opera concerning the proposed Palm Avenue parking garage.

The opera has agreed to release the 1.5-acre parking easement between the back of its building and the lot where the garage will be built.

In exchange, the city would give the Sarasota Opera $605,000 in TIF funds and an annual allotment of 1,077 parking permits in the garage for three years. The opera would then receive those parking permits at a cost of $45 to $50 each for the next seven years.

If the garage is not built, the city would have to pay the opera $145,000 or give it 1,077 parking spaces in nearby parking lots and garages.

+ Patterson running for re-election
County Commissioner Nora Patterson has announced that she’ll run for re-election.

Patterson represents District 4, which runs from the waterfront to Interstate 75 between Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road and includes areas such as Siesta Key and Gulf Gate.

She was first elected in 1998 and has twice been re-elected.

Patterson said the county’s focus during the next four years should be to come out of the recession with a more diverse economic and tax base.

+ Holiday parade date announced
The 14th annual Downtown Sarasota Holiday Parade has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

More than 4,000 participants will march down Main Street, including high-school marching bands, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, circus animals and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus.

+ County cleanup takes place Saturday
The county will hold its annual community cleanup day Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Osprey and Vamo communities.

Dumpsters will be provided at the following locations: U.S. 41 and Church Street; U.S. 41 and West Oak Street; and U.S. 41 and Livingstone Street.

Most household items, including furniture, appliances, scrap metal and yard waste will be accepted.

Paint, pesticides, auto parts, televisions, computers and other hazardous materials need to be taken to the county’s chemical collection centers at: 8750 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota; 4010 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis; and 250 South Jackson Road, Venice.
