UPDATE: 5:11 p.m. — A second trauma alert has been issued, and Bayflite is taking a second patient to Bayfront Medical Center. The Sarasota County Fire Department reports 29 patients transported. Red Cross has been called in to assist with firefighter rehab at the incident location.
BEFORE — Sarasota County Sheriff's Office reports an accident involving an estimated 30 to 50 vehicles in the southbound lanes of I-75 on the overpass at University Parkway.
The incident is a Florida Highway and Patrol investigation. There is at least one trauma alert to which Bayflite is responding. The Sheriff's Office reports at least two extrications and 10 to 12 patients at this time.
Southbound traffic is being detoured at State Road 70 in Bradenton. FHP estimates the interstate will be closed for at least three more hours.
Sarasota County Fire Department has 18 units on the scene, and Manatee County Fire Department is also providing assitance. Area hospitals have been notified.
There are reports of a tanker leaking liquid calcium, a fluid not considered hazardous.
