+ Tax-notice mistake to cost taxpayers
Although many Sarasota County residents just received their property-tax estimates in the mail, the property appraiser’s office will have to send everyone new notices, which will cost taxpayers $125,000.

The original notices did not include an increase in school taxes, which is generating nearly $900,000 for the Sarasota County School District.

Luis Guinart, managing director of the property appraiser’s office, said he would like to avoid resending the tax notices, but state law requires a new notice to be sent.

Guinart said the school district will have to pick up the cost of the mistake.

+ Osprey residents help shape district
Osprey’s 14-acre waterfront district will be the subject of a four-day charrette, designed to let residents tell developers what they would like to see built.

The district’s property is under the control of Dr. Anil Patel, who has been trying to build a mixed-use project on that land for several years.

Patel’s initial plan called for condos on the waterfront, townhomes inland and an office building with a restaurant along Tamiami Trail.

The charrettes will take place in the South Bay Shopping Center at 1264 S. Tamiami Trail. The schedule is as follows:

• Opening presentation, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21
• Community design session, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 22
• Design studio open house, 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24
• Wrap-up presentation, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26
