Sarasota will move one step closer to installing red-light cameras if city commissioners approve a contract to purchase a number of the devices Monday.

The commission will discuss a deal with American Traffic Solutions Inc., of Scottsdale, Ariz., in which the city pays nothing up front, but splits the revenue from red-light running tickets with the camera company.

The city expects about $400,000 in revenue the first year from those citations.

Specific intersections to utilize cameras won’t be determined until after American Traffic Solutions conducts a site analysis.

  • The primary purpose of this device is for road safety. Though many don't want this idea. Lots of cities have set up red light cameras at intersections to be able to find individuals running red lights in the act and ensure they're ticketed for it. Many residents and area governments aren't amused with the cams in the least, and want to get rid of them. Here is the proof: Red light cameras facing backlash from cities.
