At a press conference scheduled for 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at the Federal Building, Susan Chapman will announce that 12 former city of Sarasota mayors have endorsed her candidacy for an At-Large seat on the Sarasota City Commission.
According to a press release from Chapman’s campaign, these past mayors include: Fredd Atkins, Elmer Berkel, Mollie Cardamone, Dick Clapp, Rev. Jerome Dupree, Jack Gurney, Kelly Kirschner, Bill Kline, Richard Martin, David Merrill, Lou Ann Palmer and Nora Patterson.
Former Mayor Cardamone noted that the mayors’ combined experience represents four decades of city history, from Elmer Berkel's first term as mayor in 1975 to Kelly Kirschner's mayoral term, which ended in 2011.
“I am honored and humbled by this overwhelming show of support for my candidacy by such esteemed community leaders,” said Chapman, one of three candidates vying in the May 14 City Commission runoff election.

- Thanks for the advance notice of this. I went. Don't think I have ever seen such compelling statements made to endorse someone for a city office. Each in their own way gave support to Susan Chapmen and stressed how important this election is for the city. Truly non-partisan and representing commissioners elected from neighborhoods as well as at-large, business people, developers, and scholars among them -- I got goosebumps realizing how close we are to taking a wrong turn for our wonderful town -- nothing else could have brought these people out to close ranks behind a candidate like this.
- 12 former mayors? Can you say status quo? This should be convincing evidence that Chapman shouldn't receive any votes.
If you believe the city has been managed well then vote for Chapman.
- 12 former mayors endorsing Chapman -- that's sure is convincing -- already had made up my mind (and will stick with the ladies across the board).

… Well, we already knew that, right? Now apparently all of New York knows how wonderful our slice of paradise is, too.
