+ Osprey association has new president
The creator of the Osprey Beautification Association and its only president is stepping down after 10 years.
Carol Koehler is handing the reins to Sandy Keith, a former member of the Osprey Revitalization Committee, which dissolved Dec. 31.
Keith said she plans to continue the Beautification Association’s partnership with the Osprey Civic League, because Osprey needs more community involvement.
“We are going to be focusing on U.S. 41,” she said. “It’s beautification, the slowing of traffic and (creating) more walkability.”
The Osprey Beautification Association meets at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at First America Bank, 1307 N. Tamiami Trail.
+ Sheriff gets 103 weapons in swap
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office collected 103 firearms at its latest gun-exchange event Feb. 20.
In return for handing over a gun, county residents received a $50 gift card from Bealls department stores, Sports Authority, Sweetbay Supermarkets and more.
“Gun crimes are not particularly prevalent in our community,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. “But firearms can pose safety risks for owners who may no longer be comfortable with the weapons or when young family members are in the home.”
People turned in 140 guns at a similar event in December.
